Reviews

I bought this book solely for the reproductions. I love El Greco paintings and have waited years for a book with a large number of high-quality images and detailed close-ups. This book satisfies my long wait. I don't expect a better one to come out any time within the next ten years. With that said, the book is not perfect. Some detailed images have been blown up to cover two whole pages. Yay! But the main focus of interest--usually the face--is placed right in the center of the two pages where much is lost in the page fold. Whaaa??? Even worse, there's absolutely no reason for this because the surroundings of the head are usually plain background. These two-page images would have been better as a cropped single page consisting of the head alone. Sigh! And like all modern books that reproduce paintings, the reproductions here are vastly different from the original paintings. In this case, the reproductions boost the color and exaggerate the textures. The images look dramatic, but they are very different from the paintings. Unfortunately, this difference between reproduction and original is true of all art books (and I do mean ALL). Sometimes the difference is washed out colors, other times it's wild value fluctuations. This book, like I said, has boosted color and exaggerated textures. Still, the images in the book are very satisfying in their own way and do retain the El Greco spirit. If you love El Greco paintings, I think you will be very happy with this book.
